Barry Award Winner 2004
After a four-year absence, Melbourne’s prodigal daughter, Maria Bamford, makes a much-anticipated return to spew forth the comedy gold that saw her take ownership of the Festival’s Barry Award.
She looks as though butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth, but this wide-eyed Kewpie doll of a woman has swallowed a cast list of kooky characters – many of them disconcertingly familiar – who give voice to her inimitable spin on cultural anthropology.
Through vocal athleticism and a razor-sharp sense of funny, Maria will have you dodging punchlines she’s pitched from the most unexpected of directions.
Maria’s current TV credits include series regular voice on Word Girl, Adventure Time, Kick Buttowski, Legend of Korra, Ugly Americans and Kung Fu Panda. She was named one of Variety's Top Ten Comics to Watch and voted by Comedy Central viewers as one of their Top Ten Favorite Comics. She has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and she has two Comedy Central comedy specials and three popular CD releases.
“Cuter than a bug’s ear, but a lot sharper...A truly entertaining show by a comic of real and rare talent.” The Age
“She’s hysterically funny. A unique, bizarre act. It takes a lot to make me laugh really hard. And she definitely makes me laugh super hard.” Judd Apatow
“Bamford's vocal cords should be registered as a national treasure...Hugely entertaining and extremely funny.” Sydney Morning Herald
