The Games Master
What is sport? Do we really need it?
It’s about Fleety’s obsession with the Olympics and his mistaken belief that he could make it as a high jumper at the Games. It’s about Fleety’s doomed attempt at impressing a girl by playing rugby union for the very first time against 15 very big Pacific Islanders. It’s about trying to tell a mates’ dad that when you shot his son through the leg with a spear gun in the back of a ute, it’s because you thought he was a squid.
And Fleety answers the question – why if two men are left alone in a room with an apple* and a box of matches* will they, within an hour, have turned it into a game?
