NEWS FROM MICF & THE COMEDY WORLD

Things have been heating up around the Comedy Festival office as we’ve been slaving over the much-anticipated Program Guide for 2013. Chock full of exciting acts, we’re sure you’re all going to lose your minds for it. Plus it’s really really ridiculously good looking. You can check out some of the names already announced and purchase tickets now through our website.

Heading offshore, music and comedy are colliding left right and centre. Rolling Stone have named ‘The 50 Funniest People Now', Seinfeld is working on an album with Wale, and Tenacious D have created a new festival set for October 19, Festival Supreme. Described as the "fuckin' Super Bowl of comedy-rock", the duo are hoping to book Flight of the Conchords, Spinal Tap, Eric Idle, Lonely Island, Zach Galifianakis and Aussie Tim Minchin for the event. Finally, Irish hip hop comedy act The Rubberbandits have been wowing audiences in London ahead of their trip to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival this year – tickets for their shows at the HiFi are on sale now!

Melbourne Comedy Festival today announced the appointment of Damien Hodgkinson as Executive Director, effective from 25 February 2013.

His most recent role was Executive Director Operations at Australia Business Arts Foundation, one he has held since 2011, after being Director Victoria at the Foundation from 2008.

Damien was General Manager and CEO of Melbourne Fringe from 2005-2007 after spending over four years as Marketing Manager at Bell Shakespeare.

He started his career at Company B Belvoir in Marketing, where he worked for three years before moving to Melbourne’s Playbox Theatre for several years, and spent a year in Marketing at Melbourne Comedy Festival before being lured to Sydney by Bell Shakespeare.

Damien has been an Arts Affinity Group Member at Philanthropy Australia since 2008 and was Chair of Polyglot Theatre from 2005-2008.

Announcing the appointment today, Festival Director, Susan Provan said: "We are thrilled to welcome Damien back to the Comedy Festival, this time to the big(ish) corner office. His well-proven stamina and sense of humour will serve him well as we collaborate to find new and exciting ways to take the work of our performers to ever-larger audiences in Melbourne, Australia and overseas."

Festival Chairman, Bill Shannon said: "Comedy Festival board members are looking forward to working with Damien. We are particularly delighted that he brings such well-credentialed experience in building relationships with the corporate world – business partnerships are such an important part of the Festival's future. In our first year as a member of Arts Victoria's inaugural Lead Organisations group, we look forward to enjoying the benefit of his experience in media relations and the arts sectors of government."

Damien said: “I am thrilled to be joining the Melbourne Comedy Festival - Melbourne is always magic during the Festival and I love the overwhelming support for our local comic talent standing tall alongside the best internationally. The Festival has a proud history and strong global reputation and I am excited to be able to contribute to this legacy.”
