DEADLY FUNNY KIDS
What is it?
Deadly Funny Kids is a 'crash course in comedy' workshop program for Indigenous students in secondary school (aged approximately 12-17 years old). Its aim is to provide opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teens to take part in a relaxed, fun 2 hour workshop that can be a positive in-school experience and also touch on educational objectives such as literacy and engagement through games, Story Telling and improvisation.
Why?
- To provide Indigenous teenagers in metropolitan and rural areas with opportunities to work with professional comedians
- To encourage a fun, positive and engaging arts experience that promotes self-confidence as well as creativity
- To assist the meeting of educational outcomes such as retention, literacy and communication skills
- To provide opportunities for those who would like to explore further performance opportunities or competitions such as Class Clowns or RAW
What are we currently doing?
Thanks to a grant from Arts NSW we have piloted the Deadly Funny Kids workshop program in schools in Port Macquarie and the Broken Hill and Menindee regions and will be in Sydney and Kempsey in March 2012.
"Our students appreciated the opportunity to be involved. As a country school our students can be somewhat removed from diverse stimuli and ideas about alternative careers etc. Aboriginal culture has a strong oral tradition so this program also helped support the development of the skills used in Story Telling".

Port Macquarie High School
“Fantastic workshop – our students thoroughly enjoyed it and were talking about it for a couple of days after. Compared to many other workshops we have had this was certainly one of the best in terms of grabbing our students attention and keeping them engaged. I was surprised by how actively many of them were participating.”

Menindee Central School
“All students involved were engaged throughout the workshop. They loved that they could express their funny side and not get into trouble! Unfortunately we don’t offer Drama at this school – the kids would benefit greatly. The facilitator paced the activities evenly throughout the 2 hours and the kids thought he was really funny – they want him back next year!”
