What is Deadly Funny?
Deadly Funny is an Indigenous comedy competition that celebrates the unique humour of Indigenous Australians. It consists of workshops run by professional comedians, State heats and finals and a Grand Final at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival - with a cash prize for the winner!
Workshop
Workshops provide Deadly Funny contestants the opportunity to get their joke or yarn workshopped by a professional Stand-Up Comedian. The workshops provide tips and advice on writing and performance. The workshops also develop confidence among the participants to help them perform in front of an audience.
What can I do?
Pretty much anything: stand-up, music, jokes or a funny yarn - as long as it's funny ay? All you need to do is get a 5-minute performance together and turn up to a comedy workshop. Our workshop leaders are there to guide you with some hot tips and techniques.
State Finals
After completing the workshops we’ll leave you alone for a week or so to rehearse and practice the tips and techniques you've learnt. We then stage a live, public performance hosted by a professional Festival comedian. This is where you strut your stuff in front of your community (make sure you bring lots of supportive friends along!)
All performers get 5 minutes to present their comedy routine, which will then be judged by comedy professionals and community artists. A winner will be announced and they become the Deadly Funny State Champion. All State champions will be flown to Melbourne during Melbourne International Comedy Festival to compete to become National Deadly Funny Champion.
National Deadly Funny Grand Final
National Deadly Funny Grand Final is THE big day. The Grand Final is held during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival at Melbourne Town Hall and is seen by comedy professionals, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and Melbourne Comedy Festival punters. The Grand Final is judged by comedy industry professionals and local community leaders.
The winner of the Grand Final wins a whopping cheque worth $2000 and a Deadly Funny National Champion Trophy and of course bragging rights as Deadly Funny National Champion.
