Green Power
The Melbourne Town Hall wil be 100% Green Powered during the 2005 Comedy Festival and on Thursday 24 March it will be green and glowing thanks to Green Power.
Green Power is government accredited clean, renewable energy sourced from the sun, the wind, water and waste. Green Power produces no greenhouse pollution and is purchased on your behalf by your electricity company. It’s an investment in a cleaner, brighter future and the more households that invest the bigger the return for the environment.
Victoria is currently Australia’s worst per capita greenhouse polluter. Over 90% of our electricity is generated by burning coal, and this accounts for more than half of Victoria’s greenhouse pollution. With this in mind, the need to invest in renewable energy sources is more urgent now than ever before.
How Green Power works
When you buy Green Power your electricity company purchases energy from renewable sources and feeds it into the National Grid Network. This increases the amount of renewable electricity in the grid, reducing the need for electricity derived from the burning of fossil fuels.
The National Accreditation Program ensures that Green Power offered by electricity companies is generated from government accredited renewable energy sources. All accredited products carry the Green Power ‘tick’ of accreditation label. This is your tick of confidence that Green Power products meet stringent environmental criteria and are regularly audited to ensure enough renewable energy is purchased to meet customer needs.
Making the switch to Green Power
Green Power is purchased directly through your electricity company. Contact your electricity company or visit www.greenpower.gov.au for the full range of accredited Green Power products available in Victoria.
While the price will vary between electricity companies, Green Power is very affordable. How much you pay will depend on the percentage of accredited Green Power you nominate to purchase. You can buy 100% Green Power for approximately $5 extra per week or pay less for a lower percentage that better suits your household budget. Your electricity company can advise you of the various products available.
Switching to Green Power is easy. All you need to do is contact your electricity company by phone or online, if available. Make sure you have a recent electricity bill handy as well as personal identification such as a driver’s license, Medicare card or credit card.
