I have to preface my review by saying that I saw this show on its opening night with a very small audience, which may have affected the performance somewhat. That said, I think it needed a bit more work before being presented to any audience, first night or otherwise. There were contradictions that jumped out throughout the show – i.e., is her mum a Pentecostal pastor or a Jew? – and the lack of preparation generally made both audience and performer uncomfortable at times.
The show isn’t without its funny moments, however, especially when Anna sings popular songs with her own lyrics. Her version of Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5 made the hour worth it to me. She also gets bravery points for telling a fairly funny joke about lesbians with short hair and comfortable shoes … as I sat in the audience with my reviewer’s notebook in hand, short hair and comfortable shoes.
N.B. My rating would have been lower if I'd seen this performance in the second week.
