Joseph is a bland, anal-retentive public servant with (unsurprisingly) no social activities scheduled for April. Too spineless to create his own comedy show, he'll happily use the spare time to pass fleeting judgment on the blood, sweat and tears of others. You want ten of his stars? You better work!

Alice in Wonderland

8 / 10

True to the book, Alice in Wonderland is a great show for both kids and adults (on acid). Billed as one of the Festival’s family shows, this mini-musical hits the right note with its intended audience.

This is an acutely abridged version of the Wonderland story (thank goodness), but it retains all the important bits plus a really catchy score. The action unfolds in front of a trippy animation and uses large cut-out props which become curiouser and curiouser as the show goes on.

The cast of four, capably led by Brydie Lee-Kennedy as Alice, are all solid performers, with Patrick Magee giving a star turn as the Duchess, Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and Caterpillar. The Duchess’ jam on morals was a highlight of the show (and maybe even the Festival). Brava!

I felt there was capacity to camp up the show even more, though I warn there was a slightly awkward reliance on pantomime interaction at one point in the show – get ready to shout out to help the poor cast along.
