Mad Pride is a worldwide mass movement of the users of mental health services and former users who are proud of their 'mad' identity.
Mad Priders reclaim terms such as 'mad,' 'nutters' and 'psychos' and switch them from the negative to the positve.
The Mad Pride movement honours those who have gone before us, those currently within the psychiatric system and all allies/supporters.
We are incredibly grateful to Brian Nankervis for agreeing to MC the opening night as a Mad Pride ally. Brian has been writing, producing and co-hosting the SBS music trivia series RocKwiz’ since 2005.
Featured comedians include Ben Pobjie, Sharon Andrews, Michelle Janssen, Jacci Pillar, Zara Swindells-Grose, Yvonne Fein, Wendy Little, Ben Gaylard, Keir Saltmarsh, Sandy Jeffs, Maggie Toko, Jay Wymarra, Ben Gaylard, Jude Perl and Heidi Everett.
Mad Pride events regularly occur throughout Australasia. A range of performers from poets, singers, actors, comedians, choirs and groups set an atmosphere and leave audiences with a unique experience that words simply cannot define. It's almost as though the collective experience of all who attend Mad Pride events is packaged in such a way, that all the hurt, harm, trauma hardship that people with lived experience of mental health issues along with emotional issues experience is celebrated. Within this celebration sits a collective appreciation of kinship, compassion, understanding that is far too lacking in today's 'mad, mad, mad, mad world'.
The Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council is the peak body for people with lived experience of mental illness and or emotional issues and is a proud supporter of the inaugural Mad Pride Melbourne International Comedy Festival event.
