Hoani Hotene

It's Getting Hot-ene, So Tell Me All Your Jokes

  • New Zealand

Nominee Billy T James Award 2025 NZ International Comedy Festival

Nominee Best Newcomer 2024 NZ International Comedy Festival

Winner NZ Comedy Guild Breakthrough Comic 2023

Winner NZ Raw Comedy Quest 2022

Hoani Hotene is a fresh name in comedy, and a fresh name full stop. This up-and-coming Kiwi comic brings his mix of absurd and intellectual comedy for his Melbourne International Comedy Festival hour debut.

Growing up in a Māori world with pale skin and ginger hair, Hoani knows a lot about representing a culture you don't always look like you're a part of. And how sometimes being outside the box ends up giving you a better view of what's inside.

Getting older, wiser, dumber. Life comes at you fast and Hoani was the slowest runner at school.

It's a tough world out there – bills are high, inflation, deflation, manifestation, climate change and something's definitely wrong with money and this guy… he's trying to get by with what? Jokes? What a dumbo.

Hoani is an award-winning comic talking about growing up as an 'SPF Māori', speaking Te Reo. Save the date and come see one of New Zealand’s most promising young comics debut solo show.

Suitable for audiences 18+

Language – mild language

Licensed venue: under 18s will only be permitted with a parent or guardian

Melbourne International Comedy Festival acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live. We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' spirit, imagination and rich history of storytelling and humour that is an inspiration to all Australians.

We accept the invitation to walk together with First Nations people towards a more positive future for Australia, as described in the Uluru Statement From The Heart.
