Malaysian Comedy Allstars
We’re bringing you three stars of Malaysian stand-up – Kavin Jay (Netflix), Rizal van Geyzel (Comedy Central) and Papi Zak (Malaysia’s biggest comedian) together in one almighty show!
Kavin Jay (Netflix, Comedy Central, BBC, ABC)
One of the most sought after comedians in South-east Asia, famous for his grumpy persona and rapid fire delivery. Politically incorrect and highly relatable, Kavin’s material about his Malaysian and Indian roots is both thought-provoking and extremely hilarious.
Rizal van Geyzal (Comedy Zone Asia, Comedy Central Asia)
Coming in hot from a sell-out season at Edinburgh Fringe, Rizal is an integral part of the Malaysian comedy scene. His unique heritage (Malay, Dutch, Chinese, Turkish) makes him more Malaysian than most, with a multicultural perspective that he uses to great comedic effect.
Papi Zak (Malaysia’s biggest comedian)
A well-known face in Malaysia hosting TV shows like The Halal Foodie and Happy Endings, he’s one of the golden boys of Malaysian comedy. With his smooth baritone voice, laid-back charm and tremendous routines, Papi’s quirky style will have you rolling on the floor from the moment he steps onstage.
In the last 15 years, Malaysian stand-up has taken huge steps, growing from a small, local scene in Kuala Lumpur, to quickly gaining recognition and respect from comedians and comedy lovers around the world. The unique cultural make-up of Malaysia, combined with a natural humour that’s both infectious and relatable, mean that Malaysian comedians have a welcome knack of being able to step onto any comedy stage and be immediately at home.
Kavin, Rizal and Papi were there at the beginning, firstly stepping in to create a Malaysian comedy scene at home… and then helping bring it to the world… and now to Melbourne International Comedy Festival. If you want a show that’s more Malaysian than Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai, more Malaysian than hating on Singapore, more Malaysian than a corrupt politician… this is the show for you lah!
