Funny Tonne

The annual comedy marathon is back! Melbourne International Comedy Festival is looking for budding reviewers and arts critics to throw their hat in the Funny Tonne ring and go head-to-head in a race to see and review the most Festival shows.

Think you’ve got what it takes to run across town and see multiple shows a night every night for a month? AND write click worthy reviews? Then we’re looking for you!

Since 2005, Melbourne International Comedy Festival has challenged die-hard fans of funny to see as many shows as possible across the 26 days of events and post engaging and enthusiastic daily reviews.

Funny Tonne reviews are posted on the Festival website daily once the Festival kicks off and shared with artists and audiences throughout the Festival. The Funny Tonne title will be decided based on the depth of and engagement with their reviews as well as the number of shows seen.

With a special Comedy Passport in hand, successful applicants will defy all sensible logic in this Amazing Race of Australian comedy. It’s not quite the race that stops the nation, but this chase for chuckles is one mighty amusing challenge to find the next art and comedy critics.

If you think you’ve got what it takes, head to a RAW Comedy Heat or Final, review two contestants and fill in this form here.

Applications close Friday 13 March.

'The Funny Tonne taught me to be a more original writer. I’m probably still very hacky, but hopefully less so now. I mean how the hell do you write about 100+ shows without repeating yourself or leaning on clichés? It dared me to go beyond simply describing shows as “funny”. Was there a unique message? How did they build tension? What challenged your views? By the end, your voice is more developed and nuanced. And you’ll be surprised how much more interesting your writing becomes when you’re immersed in innovative comedy every night for weeks.' Nick Taras, Funny Tonne 2013
