Dice Paper Role: Legends is a live improvised fantasy podcast where the players take the audience on a new adventure each night, using dice to determine their characters actions and outcomes, to hilarious effect.
Dice Paper Role started in 2017 as a weekly Dungeons & Dragons game turned into a podcast for the fun of it, but has morphed into a beast of the D&D podcast scene, with 60+ episodes of the adventures of the Tight Five, as well as dozens of live shows, each featuring a completely original musical score and incredible illustrations.
Fresh from riffing on Fairy Tales at the 2019 Adelaide Fringe Festival and the world of Cinema at the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, in 2020 Dice Paper Role turn their attention to Myths and Legends, and not only because they’re in the public domain. The audience at DPR shows become an additional cast member, creating the sound effects and bit part characters that enhance the world of the story and help tell the tale.
Dice Paper Role are...
Emil Freund: An acting graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts this will be Emil’s fourth Melbourne International Comedy Festival, having performed as part of Dice Paper Role the past two years, as well as sporting lycra in his critically acclaimed 2016 Melbourne International Comedy Festival show Uncompetent with Oliver Coleman. Emil brings his quick-wit and improvised comedic stylings and original music to the realm of improvised fantasy adventure.
Lauren Bok: An award-winning comedian from Melbourne with over eight years experience in performance, radio and TV. She does mimes, burlesque, stand-up and silly voices. Along the way she's enjoyed multiple sold-out shows, rave reviews, best-newcomer lists (Pedestrian.tv and Broadsheet) was nominated for the Golden Gibbo Award at the 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and won Best Emerging Artist at the 2016 Adelaide Fringe, as well as writing for SBS Comedy and The Age.
Ben Clements: Another VCA acting grad you may have seen him gallivanting on Melbourne stages as a soldier, gangster or a pirate. This will be Ben’s third Melbourne International Comedy Festival as part of Dice Paper Role. Our tireless editor – watch as his sphincter tightens with each borderline offensive gag, knowing that he can’t edit it out.
Greg Pickering: Has practically been gaming and playing D&D since he was in nappies. A corporate sell-out (well, a not-for-profit) Greg moonlights as an improviser who will be performing at his third Melbourne International Comedy Festival in a row. He’s excited to quote pop culture and Dungeons and Dragons deepcuts for your viewing pleasure/consternation.
Dan Last: A graduate of the VCA acting school, Dan’s been most recently working on the internationally touring production Nom, nom, nom (an immersive theatre experience). He was also recently spotted buck wild nekkid in the critically acclaimed theatrical production of Stigma. 2020 will be Dan’s third Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Jack Kirby Crosby: A well respected visual artist working on some of the best video games to come out of Australia and the UK. Will he cheapen his art form with a Mr. Squiggle rip-off segment? Probs not, but you can hear his best Scottish accent as he riffs his way through our nightly adventures.
