AHEM. In. Out. In. Out. In. Out.
Throughout your entire life, you’re at it. You know: doing the old ‘in and out’. Sometimes fast and sometimes slow, but constantly at it. And when you finally stop… you die?
We are, of course, talking about BREATHING.
Returning after sell-out runs at the 2018 and 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and National Science Week 2019, Dr. David Farmer is very pleased to breathlessly but breezily present a NEW infotainment/storytelling/comedy mash. Breathe? Easy. is an irreverent neuroscientific guide to the humble act of breathing.
The show consists of a comedic, informational talk aimed at the layperson about the nuts and bolts of how breathing actually works. Dave will talk about how the brain makes your breathing muscles go, even when you’re asleep or not paying attention, why breathing on purpose is relaxing, and take detours into why wine and Greek Gods are absolutely essential for breathing.
Because, when you get right down to it, breathing is very important for life. In fact, not breathing at all often results in medical conditions including ‘DEATH’. This may be why 9/10 doctors recommend that patients continue to breathe. The 10th doctor is not a nice person and, given that they advocate death, might not even be a doctor. Let’s just say “9/9 doctors recommend breathing”.
It’s science. With comedy. Just breathe through it.
About David Farmer
David is a full-time researcher at a grown-up University in Melbourne where, despite the fact that he generally dresses like a 13-year-old, he is given free rein to explore his interest in the brainstem in something resembling a professional capacity.
David is a passionate but extremely silly public speaker and advocate for science. He has enjoyed sell-out runs at the 2018 & 2019 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and National Science Week (2018) and made numerous appearances at Pint of Science and Sydney Science Week. He was the Victorian state winner (also clinching the people’s choice award) and the Australian national runner-up at the British Council’s FameLab competition in 2015 and was shortlisted for the ABC’s Top 5 Under 40 in 2017. He makes semi-regular appearances on state and community radio and was interviewed by Colin Lane once.
'David farmer holds the audience in his hand and tells them what their is brain doing as they laugh their heads off.' Katherine Weaver, Managing Director, Impro Melbourne
