This is how you do it. With litigation looming and a particularly contentious subject person, this show still manages to be a triumph. A cavalcade of performers from the Comedy Festival joins Broadbridge on stage tonight, Isaac Compton, Nikki Britton, Jeromaia Detto, and Dane Simpson to name a few.

It’d be easy to make the Olympian the butt of the joke, but Breaking The Musical wants you to root for her, a testament to the stellar writing of the star of the show, Stephanie Broadbridge. Stephanie’s performance also needs to be commended, playing the role with the perfect balance of irony and authenticity.

Often with musicals of this nature, songwriting is given up for jokes, but Breaking manages to excel at both — whether it’s a hilarious Hamilton-style rap battle or an ode to I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, these are songs that could stand on their own without fail.

This show is a gift. Here’s hoping Steph returns with a musical of some sort at next year’s Comedy Festival.
