Hannah Gadsby

The Evening Muse

  • Australia

The Evening Muse… It’s like a tonight show, but it’s hosted by Hannah, so it probably isn’t anything like what you’d expect. But it’s exactly what Hannah will expect. Or is it?

Hannah doesn’t venture out much these days. So they're inviting people in… like guests… who knows what might happen? With different content each night of the week, join Hannah on a mission to reconnect with the world.

'If anyone can find new ways to refuse to do what is expected, it’s them.' The Guardian

'Perfection in action. A true comic genius.' ★★★★★ The Age

'One of the many things I admire about their work is a commitment not just to playing with form but also to making comic argument through it.' The New York Times

Hannah Gadsby has been a comedian for nearly two decades, but it was in 2018 that the world took notice when their groundbreaking comedy special, Nanette, launched on Netflix and stopped the comedy world in its tracks. Nanette earned Hannah an Emmy, a Peabody, an AACTA and the Most Outstanding Show awards at both Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe. Since then, Hannah has toured the world with three more solo stand-up comedy shows – selling out houses across the USA, Australia and Europe, including the Sydney Opera House, The Palladium in London’s West End, the Kennedy Center, and the Opera House at BAM in NYC. Hannah’s second Netflix special, Douglas, was also nominated for an Emmy Award and won an AACTA, as did their third, Something Special. In Hannah's fourth special, Gender Agenda, they hosted and curated the first lineup show on Netflix to showcase exclusively genderqueer comedians from around the world. In recent years, they have also managed to publish their New York Times bestselling memoir, Ten Steps To Nanette, in more than ten languages, hosted a gala at the Montreal Just For Laughs comedy festival, co-curated an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum and appeared on the television smash hit Sex Education.

Melbourne International Comedy Festival acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live. We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' spirit, imagination and rich history of storytelling and humour that is an inspiration to all Australians.

We accept the invitation to walk together with First Nations people towards a more positive future for Australia, as described in the Uluru Statement From The Heart.
