Comedy Zone
At the top of the show, Comedy Zone emcee Kushi Venkatesh offers us an analogy: every aspiring, up-and-coming stand-up comedian around the country is in a claw machine, and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is the giant claw, picking out five comedians each year. It's a mighty platform, with favourites of mine such as Hannah Gadsby and Nina Oyama among the Comedy Zone alumni.
In 2026, the five comedians who have been plucked out by the festival are Kushi Venkatesh, Peter Josip, Stella Wu, Bahaa, and Jack Knight. Together, they deliver an entertaining mixed bill that consistently felt fresh and fun.
Too often, diversity can feel like a tokenistic buzzword or a box-ticking exercise — that's not the case with this year's Comedy Zoners. All five comedians bring their background and life experience to build unique sets that feel fresh, featuring everything from the perils of having a white partner (Stella Wu) to comparing a cat to a marriage visa scammer (Bahaa).
While there were some obvious nerves in the room, the material is solid throughout. The result? Five new comedic voices that suggest an exciting future for Australian stand-up.
