I went into Skin Deep and Meaningful completely unaware of Rachael Hornbuckle, but I’m now blissfully converted.

Hornbuckle is a nurse of all trades, currently specialising in dermatology but shares stories across her years in the industry. It’s a unique perspective that feels totally untapped in the comedy market today, all cleverly explored with her wry sense of humour and gorgeously twisted brain.

Not all jokes landed and some punchlines felt admittedly quite predictable, but what I appreciated most from Hornbuckle though was her ability to back what didn’t resonate. There was a boldness to her that is usually reserved for the big dogs of comedy,  as she temperature checked the room with a level of ease. It’s a skill often unseen in emerging acts, so to see her embrace these moments with a level of charisma and cheekiness was thoroughly impressive.

I have full faith that after some finessing, Hornbuckle is only going to get better and better from here. Fans of festival greats like Elouise Eftos and Bronwyn Kuss will eat this up and her effortless ability to marry some fairly cooked punchlines with such poise and polish makes me excited to invest early.
