Sam Nicoresti - Baby Doomer
There’s a reason Sam Nicoresti is being lauded as “one of the best of the fest”. In Baby Doomer, Nicoresti takes the audience on an enriching journey with razor-sharp jokes right to the finish line. Beginning with a transphobic comment received while trapped in a TK Max dress, resting at concepts of dog names and polyamory, and arriving at the torture-chamber-machina of sperm banks, it’s clear that Nicoresti is an outstanding storyteller with a mind bursting with cartoonish tomfoolery.
Nicoresti is firmly in control of the hour, with each word choice and pause carefully considered. Her promise that there will be “more than a joke per minute” genuinely leaves a smile and makes me think about maths, which is a hard sell in a comedy show. This juxtaposition all works phenomenally with Nicoresti’s signature style of merging big philosophical prose with silly, goofy payoffs. This is most evident in the quieter moments of Baby Doomer, where we see a spotlighted Nicoresti speaking intimately down the barrel of the room, before puncturing the sincerity with a snappy, hyper-specific gag about The Lord of the Rings figurines.
A gorgeous hour that is as funny as it is honest.
