Matthew says he is technically Chilean in the same way that IKEA furniture is Swedish, brought up by a single immigrant mother in Melbourne’s public housing system.

Despite the challenges of his youth, Matthew has always looked to the positives, likely stemming from his decision to choose anime over hard drugs in early adolescence. The chalk outline of a dead body could be turned into a wonderful game of hopscotch! A Chilean nana with dementia can make for a better repetitive language learning-tool than Duolingo!

I adored Mathew's purposefully held back delivery, stumbling through his words as though he’s remembering stories for the first time, before unleashing a flawlessly constructed string of jokes.

When he’s not too busy running his mum’s dating profiles or playfully stalking his male co-workers on a lunch break, I hope he finds the time to bring us more brilliant material.

Matthew Vasquez is performing at The Motley Wherehaus, 7:30pm.
