Melbourne International Comedy Festival acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live. We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' spirit, imagination and rich history of storytelling and humour that is an inspiration to all Australians.

We accept the invitation to walk together with First Nations people towards a more positive future for Australia, as described in the Uluru Statement From The Heart.

Joana Joy Standing Still (New Zealand)

Joana Joy Standing Still (NZ)

Ex-professional dancer Comedian +a n audience with a playlist and the power to press play at any point = STANDING STILL.

In a desperate move to "do" less and "be" more, JJ has created a stand up comedy show where she will stand (mostly) still.

EXCEPT at 3 random times, decided by the audience. At these points she will absolutely throw down. Stand up comedy with dance. Maybe a Muay Thai demonstration.

Ironic winner of Australia’s Funniest State/ Territory (Adelaide Fringe ‘23), this kiwi sweetheart and vibeologist delves into the intricacies of the human condition, touching on topics ranging from meditation and tidying up, to idioms and sibling dynamics. With a background in psychology and philosophy, she offers a fresh perspective on productivity and overachieving, all in the pursuit of stillness.

With a string of accolades across the Antipodes as her cabaret alter-ego, Banana Joile, (Splendour in the Grass Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Falls Festival, ACC ads, Australia’s Got Talent Finalist) Joana Joy is definitely “an entertainer clearly unafraid of, and at home with, both herself and her audience."(Theatreview NZ). Since moving to her homeland of NZ, JJ has featured on line-ups alongside greats such as Ben Hurley, Joe Daymond, Cori Gonzalez, Tim Batt and Sameena Zehra.

Join us for a performance that's as dynamic as it is thought-provoking, where because of the way that the audience can ‘interrupt’ the comedy with dance, every night brings a new and unique experience. Come along for your chance to be part of something truly special.

'That good' - ★★★★ The Advertiser

'Fearless, intriguing and refreshing'- ★★★★★ Theatreview (NZ)

'The seamless blend of personal and social diagnosis rings sensible and true.' - The Upside News
