Statement for Prospective Participants, 2021 Melbourne International Comedy Festival

The 2021 Melbourne International Comedy Festival is scheduled to take place from the 24th of March to the 18th of April.

The Festival will proceed but due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the revolution in showbiz logistics the pandemic has caused, our festival will inevitably be different to the event we are used to.

Festival staff are consulting, communicating with and surveying relevant stakeholders as we work towards our 2021 plan. We are still some way off being able to confirm exactly what shape the Festival will take and all relevant details. We expect that venues will need to operate differently and with significantly reduced capacities. We expect that streaming of shows and events may play a bigger role than in previous years. We expect that after a very tough 2020, performers and producers as well as audiences have tight financial resources.

We hope that state borders will be open by late March 2021 so that any Australian comedians who wish to participate will be free to come. It is not looking likely that international artists will be able to secure visas by March 2021 but we are monitoring that situation carefully.

In order to give interested participants as much time as possible to consider options and retain flexibility, registrations for the 2021 Festival will close later in the year than is our usual practice. Updates on registration key dates and related issues will be rolled out in the next couple of months.
