Melbourne International Comedy Festival acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live. We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' spirit, imagination and rich history of storytelling and humour that is an inspiration to all Australians.

We accept the invitation to walk together with First Nations people towards a more positive future for Australia, as described in the Uluru Statement From The Heart.

Gordon Southern A Brief History of History (UK)

Winner Best Comedy 2022 Adelaide Fringe

Gordon was a bit of a nerd at school and he's delighted to inform you he's had a relapse. In this fast-paced, hilariously wonky history lecture he tries to tell the entire history of the world in 56 minutes, with jokes and no omissions – or refunds.

Think QI meets Horrible Histories, with music, slide shows and a wonky tie. A total sell out at it's Melbourne International Comedy Festival debut in 2012 the show was last performed in 2014 receiving Best Comedy nominations in Edinburgh, Perth and NZ along the way.

The updated version has already astonished, amused and informed in a site-specific special at The Museum of South Australia in 2023 and Gordon has been deep diving into the past to cram more jokes and facts into this already.

The history of A Brief History of History...

The show was inspired by an illuminating and zealous chat from QI producer John Lloyd. Way back in 2003, Series 1 Episode 1. Gordon was the audience warm up for several seasons and took on board Lloyd's commendable commitment to making hilarious shows that were also educational and, well... Quite interesting.

'Southern presents a breezy, bright and exuberant show that zips along, utterly engaging the audience and educating them in a wonderful and manic hour of comedy.' The Punch

'This is an awe inspiring hour of historical hysteria... a comedy festival gem!' Keeping up with the Grid
