Laughing Matters: Comedy and Free Speech in India
Panelists: Sapan Verma, Daniel Fernandes, Neeti Palta

'This is EIC Outrage, where we talk about issues... and hope to not get assassinated'. That's how comedian Sapan Verma chose to introduce one episode of his popular East India Comedy 'Outrage' YouTube series.

India's comedy scene seems to be enjoying a space of unpoliced free expression within a conservative culture and tightening media censorship. Stand-up is where many of the sharpest Indian voices comment on social issues, finding humour in subjects as diverse as Bollywood, terrorism, Tinder, feminism, international cricket, youth suicide, and Game of Thrones. Our panelists will talk censorship, stand-up and how comedy might change the world.

Presented by The Wheeler Centre and Melbourne International Comedy Festival

Saturday 22 April
3pm (75 mins)
The Wheeler Centre

Jeez Louise Address: Cal Wilson

Women in comedy. The questions are always asked. Based on anonymous answers from industry and audiences, Cal discusses whether gender makes a difference... from the perspectives of those watching, programming and performing comedy.

The address will explore honest responses around diversity in the world of comedy. What does the industry actually think? Is it what we think they're thinking?

Presented in collaboration with Nelly Thomas
