Melbourne International Comedy Festival acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live. We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' spirit, imagination and rich history of storytelling and humour that is an inspiration to all Australians.

We accept the invitation to walk together with First Nations people towards a more positive future for Australia, as described in the Uluru Statement From The Heart.

JNewtz Identity Crisis

JNewtz Identity Crisis

Struggling to fit into society, his body and his mind, JNewtz's life has been one on-going Identity Crisis. In his first ever solo stand-up show the social misfit reveals all in this dark look into his life, past and present.

A physiatrist once diagnosed JNewtz by saying "With his eclectic clothing style and traces of makeup, I'd suggest he has identity issues!"

We've all had a mid-life crisis, imposter syndrome, anxiety, questioning your purpose, low self-esteem, feeling like a misfit – call it what you will, basically it's an Identity Crisis.

JNewtz never felt like he fit in – at school, sports clubs, his body or even his voice. The only thing that gave him a feeling of belonging was punk-rock music, a genre that reached out to all the outcasts and touched a chord deep inside them. It was this music that gave JNewtz a feeling of rebelling, a feeling of being different, a love of alternative styles of clothing, makeup and hair colouring – all the things that are non-conforming to what normal people call ‘society’.

Becoming JNewtz was to depart from who he was and create a new style, a new attitude and a new outlook on life. Learing to accept who you are, what you are and who you want to be – all while enduring an on-going Identity Crisis along the way.

“Life is all about laughing; laughing at ourselves. Sometimes it’s light-heated and other times it’s dark. I’ve learned that the more you can laugh about the darkness, the lighter our lives become.”  – JNewtz
