This year, we partnered up with the Transport Accident Commission to ensure people accessing the festival get around safely.
Together, we’re asking Melburnians to keep their Heads up and Phones down and Stand up for pedestrian safety. The month long campaign will be rewarding pedestrians, who are paying attention, making them the real VIP’s of the festival - the Very Intelligent Pedestrians.
There is growing evidence that using your phone as a pedestrian can lead to really serious injuries, so we need people to focus on their surroundings and not their mobile phones, coming and going to the festival.
As humans we are vulnerable and weren’t designed to survive crashes, so it’s important that as pedestrians we make good choices every time we’re near busy roads.
See how TAC and its road safety partners are making roads safer for vulnerable road users here.
Remember, when you are out and about this festival, crossing the road glued to your phone is riskier than sitting front row at a comedy festival!
Keep your eyes peeled for the LED lit Ghosting Green Man at the Town Hall from 6pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights throughout the festival.
New LED strip lighting on the footpaths has been installed to remind pedestrians to pay attention before crossing the road at the traffic lights.
The VIP Lollipop Ladies will be rewarding positive behaviour with giveaways including free passes to comedy shows at the festival. Remember, keep off your phones near intersections for your chance to WIN!
Bring the kids down for some free school holiday entertainment at the VIP Lounge in Federation Square over the Easter weekend. Grab a comfy cushion from the friendly VIP staff and watch a comedy show, get a photo at the zebra crossing photo booth, sip on a free latte and keep the kids busy with the activities.
