The first comedy I watched was ‘Thank God You’re Here’ when I was six years old. The first thing I wrote was a piece lamenting my hatred for Ibis. ‘Dump bird dump bird I hate you’. Since then I’ve been obsessed with comedy and writing about it. Not satisfied with just pestering my friends and family about my latest comedy passions I started posting about it on the internet as @23fmfan where I talk about Australian and New Zealand comedy, tv, and film! For as long as I can remember I’ve watched the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Gala and Opening Night Comedy Allstars Supershow on tv with a religious passion, so to be writing reviews for MICF’s Funny Tonne would absolutely blow the mind of six year old me. I probably won’t be hating on any bird species in my reviews which would disappoint younger me.32 reviews
Ryan (he/they) is a theatre-maker and critic based in Narrm who tells stories about place, otherness, and utopia. A graduate of Monash University's Centre for Theatre & Performance, his practice is rooted in queer, site-specific, & verbatim methodologies. In 2023 Ryan co-created and toured Full Cream (Emerging Company Incubator Award, Melbourne Fringe 2023). His day job is in social media management, but in the evenings, you can almost always find him in a theatre.30 reviews
I have always been a massive fan of the comedy festival since I moved back to Melbourne in 2018. I have been known by many as the comedy and musical theatre encylopedia and this festival does nothing but fuel this! Studying a Bachelor of Arts in Creative and Professional Writing, I am so excited to be a Funny Tonner this year to challenge myself with each new review, finding more words than funny, entertaining or enlightening-although I'm very aware with the lineup this year that these words are all very true! I think in general, the arts are a very important way to tell stories and provoke emotions in audience's that stay with them for long after a show is done and this festival is a perfect way to celebrate that. I can't wait to see what MICF24' brings to the table and am very excited for this amazing opportunity!Would you like to renew it?
