Elliot Ulm - Book Signing
Whether it’s challenging himself to produce 100 logos in as many minutes, or using Garageband to design a poster, Elliot Ulm is one of my favourite online creators and a phenomenally talented graphic designer.
I would have been more than happy to simply witness Elliot demonstrate his mad skills in the flesh, but this hyper-interactive, improvised performance art piece about the insecurity of male creative ‘genius’ and the corporatisation of the arts was a welcome surprise!
It’s courageous to market your special as ‘Book Signing’ with the hopes that your audience will clock the joke, but even more so to practically bomb on purpose for an entire hour.
The character of ‘Elliot Ulm’ is a failed artist/author desperately trying to connect with the potential fans in attendance over his unreleased ramblings of unrequited love, pants wetting, and blatant copyright infringement. The real Elliot made it so much fun to humour ‘fake Elliot’ and his many delusions. Soon, even his deranged doodle of a logo for a pet card brand started to look like a masterpiece.
To make up for any confusion regarding the show’s title, Elliot was willing to sign literally anything after the show! In my case, a beloved picture of myself dressed up as Steve Jobs in primary school. Tragically, Google Photos glitched and the photo disappeared, so I guess I might just have to see his show again…
Elliot Ulm is performing at Trades Hall, 7:40pm (6:40pm on Sunday).
