Melbourne International Comedy Festival acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands upon which we work and live. We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' spirit, imagination and rich history of storytelling and humour that is an inspiration to all Australians.

We accept the invitation to walk together with First Nations people towards a more positive future for Australia, as described in the Uluru Statement From The Heart.

The Funny Tonne

Lots to Say

Lots to Say

Plenty of comedians attempt dark material, and some succeed. But few do it as well as Michael Shafar.

If someone is going to talk about taboo topics the audience has to trust them,  luckily Shafar has likability in spades. Right from the start he’s genuinely friendly and charismatic. He’s just endearing enough in his delivery that it's easier than one might think to get the crowd laughing at jokes about some of the darkest topics. But it’s not all jokes, Masterchef Racist has real legs and could be coming to pilot week soon, and actually his proposal that we all wear nametags should be made law.

Shafar’s talent lies in combining being earnest with razor sharp wit, and just a touch of generational trauma. If you like comedians that don’t just tread the line, but in fact use it as a starting point then Michael Shafar’s Lots to Say is the show for you!
